I'm not even sure how to write about this show. Girl Talk must be experienced. I'd heard about him months ago before Coachella. "He's a great mash-up DJ from Pittsburgh." Uh, no thanks, I'll pass. Then I lucked out and caught him at a festival in Barcelona in May. 3am set time, crazy European crowd, strong nicotine buzz (I never smoke, except in NYC and Europe), and some of the most fun I've had in a long time.
Dan Deacon should be a headliner himself and got the basement of the Echo nice and warm. Of course, you couldn't see him the entire time since he actually set up his gear on the floor in the middle of the crowd. All that was on stage was a glowing skull mask hooked on the mic stand that pulsated with his beats. Very, very cool.
Girl Talk (aka Gregg Gillis) came out and immediately went crazy. The Echoplex went nuts; even the normally reserved grumpy hipsters were dancing; the entire place was sweating. He threw in a few surprises (eg Peter Bjorn and John samples), invited everyone on stage, and danced like a maniac the entire set.
Pounding coffee in class the next morning, I silently thanked the great BLT from Fred 62 for getting me through the night and on campus after just 3 hours of sleep.
